Enrollment and Expectations

If your child is experiencing difficulties learning to read in the regular classroom setting, he or she may be at-risk for reading difficulties and in need of additional help in gaining the necessary skills to become a successful reader. The University of Utah Reading Clinic offers such services. The following steps outline what parents or guardians can do to obtain assistance from the UURC.

  1. Call the clinic, (801) 265-3951, to schedule an appointment for your child to be assessed. There is a fixed fee for this assessment ($50). This informative assessment will provide important information about your child’s reading abilities.
  2. After your child is assessed, clinic staff members review the assessment and make a determination of whether UURC intervention is indicated.
  3. Within two-three weeks after the assessment, you will receive a letter with the results and recommendations regarding intervention.
  4. If intervention is recommended, your child will be placed on a waiting list for the next available tutoring slot. If, for any reason, UURC intervention is not recommended, the reasons will be explained in writing.
  5. We welcome your calls to discuss any questions regarding the assessment results or to discuss our suggestions for your efforts with your child at home.

Tutoring

When a tutoring slot becomes available for your child you will be notified by phone. The following is an overview of the terms and conditions required when participating.

  1. Fees - Based on a sliding scale according to income and family size. Tuition is billed on a monthly basis and is due by the third session of each month. However, no child will be turned away for lack of ability to pay.
  2. Sessions - Tutoring occurs twice a week. Each session lasts 45 minutes. Your child will be assigned a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday slot.
  3. Calendar - Generally, the clinic follows the academic school calendar and closes on the same holidays (i.e., Labor Day, UEA, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Martin Luther King, Jr., Easter, Memorial Day)
  4. Attendance - Regular attendance and punctuality is critical to the success of the intervention and must be adhered to as to the terms stated in the contract.
  5. Contract - Parents/guardians of children who receive UURC tutoring services must sign and adhere to a contract that outlines requirements regarding fees, attendance, and student behavior. (Copy of contract)

Practica

Children who have been previously assessed by the UURC and found to qualify for Next StepsSM are eligible to be tutored as part of a summer practicum for educators.
