The University of Utah Reading Clinic (UURC) provides assessment and instructional intervention to enable students to overcome reading difficulties.
Parents or legal guardians concerned about their child’s reading ability may make an appointment at the UURC site in Salt Lake City for an assessment. After the results are analyzed and the staff deems that basic intervention could be beneficial, the child will be placed with a tutor at the earliest opportunity. Procedures for enrollment and expectations for the sessions will be discussed with each family. Any questions can be referred directly to the Clinic Administrative Assistant, Nikki Fellows, or the director, Dr. Kathleen J. Brown.
While basic intervention is effective with most struggling readers, research indicates that approximately as many as 3% of elementary students (Vellutino et al., 1996) do have a specific reading disability (e.g., dyslexia). The UURC has begun offering services for these students (in a limited capacity).
